Nikon D300 - Come, See and Capture

Posted by admin in Uncategorized on 12 18th, 2008

The Nikon D300 digital camera is also known as the ND300 and was launched in August 2007. This semi-professional digital SLR camera was launched along with the Nikon D3 FX camera. The ND300 is similar to the Nikon D3 FX, but is a higher speed camera with a better image resolution and a DX censor instead of a FX one. It is more compact than the regular D3 FX. A successor to the popular D200, it has the reputation of being the ultimate in DX format performance.

In fact, the Nikon D300 got rave reviews from some of the leading magazines like Shutterbug, Outdoor Photographer and the UK based magazine What Digital Camera. Post launch, the camera was conferred the title of The Official Camera of The Year by Popular Photography, a widely read magazine.

The Nikon D300 is packed with various features. The camera is driven by Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED Image Processing System. It features a new 51-point autofocus (AF) system and two new LiveView shooting modes. With a high-resolution 12.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, the camera captures high quality pictures. The D300 can shoot at a rapid six frames per second or at an incredible eight frames per second powered by its optional MB-D10 multi-power battery pack.

Equipped with the new Active D-Lighting mode, the camera allows you to make highlighting and shadow corrections in real-time. Its 3-inch LCD monitor has a wide viewing angle of 170 degrees, which makes it very easy to compose pictures in LiveView mode.

Its built-in ultrasound cleansing system helps to minimize sensor dust. Other features include advanced focusing modes, including single and continuous servo focusing modes. The focusing modes have a single area, a dynamic area and group dynamic area AF. The camera comes with an HDMI port that lets you connect the D300 directly to your HDTV.

All these features are housed in a robust magnesium alloy body with excellent ergonomics. With its functional design, the camera allows the user to take pictures with greater accuracy and comfort. All these features make this camera a favourite with both amateurs and professionals.

The standard accessories with the D300 include an EN-EL3e rechargeable lithium ion battery, an EG-D100 video cable, a LCD monitor cover, a DK-5 eyepiece cap, a DK-23 rubber eyecup, a MH-18a quick charger and a UC-E4 USB cable.

good camera with decent features
I bought this for my wife as a christmas present to capture our Son's first christmas. It was easy to use right out of the box. The zoom, record, and selector functions are in convenient places for one handed operation. The other functions are easy to navigate and learn on the fly. I haven't read the manual and was easily able to pick it up and operate it with little trouble.

I like the fact that it makes movies in files so you don't inadvertently record over something you may have wanted to save. Overall a good purchase for the price.

Good "beginner" camcorder, and a little more
I got the cheaper Aipteck "HD" camcorder for Christmas, and it just didn't cut it in any way. My previous experience has been with a good, but old, Sony mini dv recorder. I still like it, but it's comparatively big and heavy and uses tapes, which are a pain to store, rewind, etc. The Sony is easy to edit with, using Adobe Premiere, and produces very good video. But, I wanted a kickaround camcorder that was lightweight and small that I would use in more casual, spontaneous situations. The reviews for the FS 100 were good enough so I got one, a little cheaper elsewhere. I liked it right out of the box. It has limited but adequate functions, so it was easy figuring out all of them pretty quickly. The manual is ok. I had no trouble navigating the menus with the joystick, and found it quite responsive and easy (and quick) to use (easier than navigating the multiple layers of menus on my Sony). The biggest appeal of the FS-100 is the light weight, and how it fits in the hand--you almost forget you are carrying it around. Simple on and off--click one button and flip out the viewfinder--the shutter cover opens and you're instantly ready to shoot. This was my first flash disk camcorder, though I have other flash disk equipment. I was concerned about the speed of the card needed so I bought an Extreme III 4 GB card, and being satisfied with that, tried a couple Kingston 8 GB class six cards. All have performed well so far. Just for fun, I took a 2 GB class 2 Kingston card out of my still camera and tried it in the camcorder. It worked just fine. The flash disk operation makes transferring files a snap. I have a card reader built in to my laptop and the transfer of files is lightning quick. It's a little slower using the USB cable to my desktop, but not bad. So once I could see the DVD produced from the footage on my 42" plasma TV, I noticed what others have mentioned--this is not a great camera for low light. You will get grain. I haven't fooled much with the manual settings, and I think I could get better results with some experimentation. I shot some band footage in dark clubs and noticed that some of the blurriness was the result of the autofocus not quite knowing what to focus on--I'm going to experiment with using manual focus and see if that improves things. Where this camera shines is in daylight outdoors. When the camera is still, you can get excellent crisp video of outdoor objects. The camera is a bit slow to refocus in the modes I've used it in, so movement of the camera produces some blur--not too bad. Once again, I think some experimentation with the limited manual settings could improve that. If the camera is on a tripod, or very still, the zoom is absolutely incredible. You can control the zoom speed with a great deal of precision, with a little practice, and the video stays in focus through the zoom as long as the camera isn't moving a lot. You can get excellent closeup shots of small objects with this camera using manual focus. The stereo mics on the camera are very good-- you get crisp clear sound, as long as it's not too loud. A loud band will kick in the compressor, but it takes a lot to distort the sound. Normal everyday sounds come through brilliantly. I haven't tried using any of my external mics yet, and I'm looking forward to seeing how that goes. As for the editing software that comes with the camera--it's not too bad. You can import the MOD files directly from the camera, arrange them in a timeline, add titles, transitions, etc and produce an ok movie, and burn it to DVD. The rendering takes a while, but it all works. For those who said there were no help files, you need to access the pdf file on the program CD. The program is pretty adequately explained. People who want to use Premiere to edit, as I tried to do, will have to do some file conversion, or they may run into problems. I wanted a program that would work directly with MOD files, run a little faster than the program that came with the camera, and work on Vista 64-bit. Some research turned up Corel Video Studio, and I downloaded the free trial. It works great as a basic editor, probably similar to Adobe Premiere Elements. It renders video quite a bit faster than the camera's editing program and gives a greater and more convenient selection of file formats to export to. I've created several standard DVDs complete with nice menus that were simple to put together, and I'm happy with the results. I'll most likely buy the Corel program with my educational discount. Bottom line for this camera: it's a pretty good entry-level camcorder, extremely easy to use, and convenient to carry with you. With the right editing program you can produce adequate DVDs that look pretty good in a minimum amount of time. With some care and time spent practicing with manual settings, I think the quality in lower light situations might improve. I'm happy I got this camera. It won't be the last or best one I buy, but it serves the purpose I got it for--speed, convenience, and fun.

great camcorder
got this for christmas works great with image maker to see the files
got online videothang.com to edit them free download with those two programs OUT OF THIS WORLD !!!!!

Not for low light. . .
. . . unless you like grainy, smeary pictures. My kid's Flip camcorder is a better choice for low light.

Good for the price
I wanted to have a good experience with this camera, but it was complicated and took me a while to figure things out. The menu functions are complicated, the little "joystick" sucks and the still image function isn't great.

The video does look nice. Daytime videos look crisp and clear, I've had little issue with movement and ghosting. Indoor video is a bit fuzzy sometimes, but using the proper function and the LED light help a lot. My husband hates the LED light, so do my animals, it is rather bright.

I love the remote control, and I love being able to hook the camera to my tv and play the video back, it transfers to TV nicely and looks great!

The video quality really saved this camera because otherwise I would have returned it.

Flip video camcorder
This was a Christmas gift for a 14 year old. He has really enjoyed using the flip. The only problem we have come across is that the batteries need to be replaced often.

flip video
the flip is great except i'm no techie and haven't taken the time to make it a device that will email easily. Files are big and take some time to get where they are sent. Easy set up and installation. Should make a great tool

Flip Video
This is a fun and easy gadget to use. Needs plenty of light to get a good picture, but for the price the picture quality is acceptable. I've used other camcorders and like this one the best for ease of use. Fits in my pocket so I can take it along without the hassle of a larger, expensive camera that I worry about getting damaged or stolen. Great for those spontaneous shots of the grandkids. The zoom feature is worthless, lose picture quality. I'm having trouble starting or stopping the recording at times. That little red button just doesn't always work.

Flip Video
Love it, gave several as Christmas gifts. It is a different style to get used to, but so versatile and simple. You make your own cds and can give them as gifts. Very simple to use and worth the money.

The Flip Video is a blast!
I have had so much fun with this Flip Video camera. It is easy to use, just press one button to record and the software is also is as easy to use. I have made and sent videos to friends and family. This would be a great gift for the young, budding director.

Best piece of technology in a long time!
The first practical video camera. If your looking to capture real life 'up close' moments for sharing with others, this is the tool. Not for long distances or big events. Great for everything else.

Great product
Love it. Simple but with most of the features necessary. Editing is weak but small issue for the benefits.

small, good price but not good quality
The camcorder is small and easy to use, the price is good. However, in the first few days, the camcorder freeze several times in the middle of taping. So every time, we have to turned of the camcorder to reset it, but the tapped stuff was gone. It was not in good quality at all so we had to returned the item.

Shopped for Christmas
This was a present, so I was not able to try it, but asked daughter and she said it was perfect. I thought the price was very good and shipping was prompt.
Thanks,
CS

Great Little Gadget makes Video as Easy as Still Shots
I have a nice Canon Camcorder but this Flip is a hoot and is more fun to operate even with all its limitations. I sometimes use a monopod with the Flip HD to stabilized it and really get some great "amateur" videos. The zoom is extremely limited but is a huge improvement over the Flip Mino (I have both). Sound quality is just fine for a built-in mic and when the unit is connected to my big screen TV the videos are too much fun to watch. The video editing software is very limited so I use iMovie to do most of the editing.

For a senior adult, the Flip HD has made me hip and an instant hit. I can now post to YouTube without fear. This is a great grandpa tool that fits in your pocket.

very pleased with purchase
I am very pleased with this product. the stores in my area had only a limited amount of the product. I was able to purchase two with no problem and very quick delivery.

The Tom Tom is Great!!
I purchased a Tom Tom for myself and one for my daughter and her two sons. I love it and can't hardly believe how it can get you to where you want to go. My daughter and son-in-law used theirs to go to the twin cities the other nite, and it took them right where they wanted to go - that to me is a real plus. I am sure that I will like it this summer for going camping. I would recommend this GPS to everyone.

8 Megapixel Slidy Phone Action - LG Kc780 Vs Sony Ericsson C905

Posted by admin in Mobile on 11 17th, 2008

If you want the best photos you can get out of a mobile phone, then you need an 8 megapixel camera. But which should you choose? Today, I’m going to take a look at two sexy, sliding alternative: the LG KC780 and the gorgeous Sony Ericsson C905. But first, let’s take a quick look at the history, to see what these two camera phones owe their roots to.
Camera phones in history - the world created by Sony Ericsson
It’s fitting, really, that Sony Ericsson are the ones leading the way in the coming paradigm shift in camera-equipped mobile phones. After all, it was them who started it all, way back in 2002. Let’s not forget that they were the first company to release a mobile phone with a camera in it, within the British marketplace. That mobile was the Sony Ericsson P800, but it didn’t really hit the mass market in the way that Sony Ericsson wanted, since it was an amazingly (compared to other mobile phones at the time) high-end smartphone. But, their most iconic handset ever was about to hit the market, and that one DID have great market penetration. It was the Sony Ericsson T610, and it really did change the game. Here was a handset that stood head and shoulders over the other mobile phones it was up against. It was small, it was sexy, and people went MAD for it. And, let us remember that the Sony Ericsson T610 had also got a built-in camera, and that it was really the first handset to hit that mass audience, and make them go, ‘Hang on, we really do want our mobile phones to have cameras in ‘em!’
Of course, Sony Ericsson don’t have things all their own way, and if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, look no further than the LG KC780.
LG KC780 - low budget meets high spec
It may surprise you to learn that despite having that 8 megapixel camera, the LG KC780 is much closer to the world of budget mobile phones, than to top-enders like its sibling, the KC910. The fact that the LG KC780 has one of the best cameras of any mobile phone, combined with some great deals, thanks to its low price, means it’s a genuinely attractive prospect. You may be wondering how LG have kept the price low, and doubtless you’re thinking they’ve sacrificed something else to shoehorn that camera in. Well… oh ok, yes, they have sacrificed something on the LG KC780, namely internet speeds, as it doesn’t have 3G, let alone HSDPA. Ok, that is a bit disappointing, as most mobile phones at least have 3G nowadays, but the upside to that is a big one: the price of the LG KC780 has been brought down immensely, and that means you’ll get an 8 megapixel camera phone for a fraction of the price you’d expect!
However it’s up, here, against one of the best on the market. Let’s see how it holds up…
Sony Ericsson C905 - raw, unadulterated power?
You just can’t deny power, and one thing is for definite: the Sony Ericsson C905’s got loads and loads more raw power than any other mobile phones you can get in the UK. Why is it so special? Simple, as well as it having an 8 megapixel camera, the Sony Ericsson C905 is also packed with Cyber-Shot cleverness, to make for a frighteningly powerful camera phone. But it doesn’t end there, however. Add in a top of the range multimedia browser, WiFi, HSDPA and built-in GPS, and the end result is that the Sony Ericsson C905 is a genuine stunner. But is it a better buy than the LG KC780? Well, the KC780 certainly has the price advantage, but I’ll say this: the Sony Ericsson C905 absolutely mullers it on features, and for that reason, the Sony Ericsson C905 wins this battle hands down!

Customer Reviews

ACER-ONE
Good product. Crook procedures
The product comes from the factory with its own case.
In 2 out of 3 orders, this original case was taken out of the package because I decided to accept their offer and bought under separate order a carrying case for which I paid $ 25 additional/each
I am expecting Amazon.com or whomever is resposible, to send me the carrying case that was supposed to come included in the original package with the notebook.

acer aspire. good value
I was worried the screen size would hurt my eyes. You actually get used to it very quickly and the size becomes normal for you. I was actually very surprised this machine can load and play games (I have downloaded several games 10 - 100 MB) with no problem at all. Spending the few x-tra bucks on the 1 GB RAM probably made a difference here. There are sometimes online glitches. For example, sometimes the Explorer screen wigs out and the image gets really big (the g in google fills the whole screan) or really small (the whole webpage goes into one square inch in the upper left corner). Also, sometimes the internet takes awhile to load. Seems to occur mostly when surfing to a new page which has to load. It's like it bogs down for no reason... even with a very strong signal. All this is pretty weird, but only happens every so often. Closing Explorer and starting over has always solved it. The battery is awesome. My son played video games on two flights with a layover (cheap babysitter... bad parent).

I shopped a lot before buying. This looked like the best speed, memory, and battery for your buck in a netbook. It has become me and my son's favorite technology/media in the house.

battery clip remover
i was very amazed with what the netbook can do. however, when i was taking out the battery, the sliding clip snapped and was removed. i was able to put it back, but i am afraid that any time from now, it would snap out again.

Great addition to a network...
The Acer Netbook has been a great addition to our network at home. It provides a great terminal to surf the web and check email. I haven't tried much more than that - but it serves the reason for purchased perfectly. Not having a CD/DVD drive is not an issue since you can copy items onto a Flash Drive and install easily. Have had not issues with any programs to include MS Office 2007 Pro. Definitely Recommend.

Love it!
Though it wasn't perfect out of the box, I do love my Acer Aspire One. It works well enough as configured, but for power use it does require a RAM and WiFi card upgrade. System RAM was half-used with no programs running, and performance was just okay. Adding 1GB of RAM made the Aspire One blaze along. But the process is not for the amateur, nor the faint of heart. You have to take the computer apart completely and remove the motherboard. Acer placed the memory as deep as they could, unfortunately. It's easy, but you just have to be mindful of which screws go where. There are a few videos on YouTube that show the process.

And while you have the computer apart, you should upgrade the WiFi card. The one that shipped with my Aspire One was unreliable and would just stop receiving from time to time. Replacing it with the Intel 4965AGN card produced amazing results. Even with my 802.11b router, the connection feels more like a wired connection, at least 5x faster than the Atheros card that ships with the computer. And with a wireless G connection, it's ridiculously fast.

Total cost to upgrade the unit was : .99 for the RAM and for the WiFi card. Upgrade time was about an hour. It took me a little longer because I forgot to uninstall the Atheros software, which required that I reinstall the card to uninstall the SW.

The only other problem with the Aspire One is that it occasionally doesn't go into standby mode. This usually happens after I or some application installs something. I have to hard reboot, fully boot the computer, then fully shut it down and restart again for Standby to start working properly again.

Other than that, it's a sweet little computer. Though I have medium-sized hands, the keyboard works fine for me -- and I'm pretty picky about keyboards. The screen is small, but I like that. My daughter doesn't like that the screen is too short vertically to play Webkins, so if you use programs like this, you might need to consider a larger computer, but for basic stuff, including running most Windows XP programs written over the last eight years, the Aspire One is a great choice. I'm mostly a Mac user, but do need a PC now and then, and the Aspire One is perfect. I can hook it up to a monitor and keyboard for "bigger" work, and it will sync to many different screen sizes.

It's also a great tool for photographers. I use it on location to download and view my images when I don't want to bring the big PowerBook along. Its 6-hour battery life makes it perfect for such work.

Just an amazing device, I couldn't be more pleased.

A Wireless Enhanced Marriage - Part Two

Posted by admin in Other on 10 20th, 2008

Remembering to Remember

Let’s face it, nowadays there’s no excuse for either partner to forget important events such as birthdays or anniversaries.  We can now wirelessly sync our PDAs to display parallel information (and reminders) and our calendars can even prompt to tell us that we need to buy a card, gift and so on; so there’s no chance of any big day slipping our minds.  This does, however raise the question: “Has technology taken the romance out of modern marriage, or has it positively enhanced it?”

For example, from a wife’s perspective, should I celebrate the fact that a reminder pops up on my husband’s screen about my birthday several days before the event and then gives him an option to purchase his card and gift online?  Should I be thrilled that the same store then provides suggestions as to the ideal gift, based upon my age, weight and hair color?  Or should I look back wistfully on yesteryear, when he all too often hurriedly grabbed a bunch of flowers on the way home along with the only ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR WIFE” card left in the garage shop and then tried to discretely phone a restaurant to book a last minute table?  Should the ‘new and improved’ wirelessly-enhanced version of my event-ready husband be applauded or chastised?  A personal choice I realise, but I rather liked the bashful last minute romantic offerings of the old Dean.  Call me an old fashioned girl, but there was something quite endearing about the sudden realization of the missing card or gift that made the ‘making up for it’ so much more romantic than the sometimes all too smug handing over of the perfect (haveIgotagiftforyou.com) prezzie (beautifully gift wrapped as an optional extra of course!).

A Debt of Gratitude

I fear that I may be somewhat straying from the core message of this piece.  It was intended from the start to be a grapple of the Grattons, a wireless rant if you will, about how wireless might be used to enhance and improve my husband.   Instead, I find myself singing its praises for the most part for having narrowed the distance between us on so many occasions.  I guess that I’m just a woman who’s content with her man after all.  Unlike wireless technology, we don’t always want a seamless and invisible connection, especially in the bedroom!  Marriage is all too often turbulent, messy and passionate, but that’s what fundamentally keeps it alive.  So whilst we may have narcissistic fantasies of what the perfect spouse should be I have to admit that absolute perfection would inevitably grow to be boring very quickly; hence a dichotomy forms, since being boring ultimately makes the perfect man imperfect!  Similarly, control shouldn’t be one sided, as experienced within a wireless context - no master and slave relationship for me thank you very much, but a joining of minds and souls that, if correctly balanced, withstands the test of time.

There is no doubt that wireless technology surrounds us and will continue to grow and, to some extent, dominate our lives.  Even smarter homes will rise up with greater incorporated technology and more wireless capability than ever perceived possible, but the truly smart family will be able to distinguish, and nurture, the difference between real-time and real times together.  Sounds terribly corny I know but it’s a statement that will undoubtedly hold particular meaning for those spouses who see more of their husbands or wives on their computer screens than they do on their sofas.

For as long as I have known my husband, he has been passionate about wireless technology.  Out of this passion has sprung an extraordinary career, resulting in the publication of three amazing books on wireless technology along with a string of successful articles.  For this, above all else, I owe wireless technology a debt of gratitude and I can honestly say that, for all intents and purposes, my husband has been truly wirelessly-enhanced.   So thank you wireless for making my husband the man he is today; successful, happy and, although not always here, always loved.

A Wireless Enhanced Marriage - Part One

Posted by admin in Other on 10 20th, 2008

When my husband first suggested I write ‘the wife’s’ perspective of ‘his, soon to be published, wireless- enhanced spouse’ article, my first thought was one of sheer panic. Images of the Six Million Dollar Man sprang to mind “We can rebuild him.  We have the technology”.  After all, in order for me to effectively talk about enhancing my other half; the man I have chosen to spend the rest of my life with, I would first have to reveal any flaws he might have to the reader wouldn’t I?   If so, what were these flaws and could I really bring myself to air his metaphorically dirty boxers so publicly?   And then, as if in response to my predicament, he skyped me to happily fill me in on the fact that he had already written his first 500 words.  No such quandary at his end then!  And so, fingers poised at the keyboard, I say without further hesitation, let the grapple of the Grattons begin.

Keeping Tabs

From a marketing perspective, it’s always a wise move to, wherever possible, track consumer spending habits and preferences and to utilize these in your predictions of future trends and ultimately new product development.  From a marriage perspective, the consumer trends of our spouses might be especially valuable to track, particularly when he insists that “I only had the two pints, darling” or “I left your anniversary present at the office sweetie, I’ll just pop and get it”.   I fear that the Marriage Guidance Council may be rolling their eyes at the suggestion of such a relationship ‘missile’ and I have to say that, for the most part, I agree.  “Where’s the trust?” I hear you cry.  Okay, okay.  I get it!  Bad idea perhaps!  But wireless tracking via the combination of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and Wi-Fi does already exist, due predominantly to the collaboration between Siemens and the lesser known Finnish company Ekahau, who last year decided to bring together the two technologies to provide real-time tracking of objects and people inside a wireless network.  Its value lies in understanding the movements of people and equipment in a building through the attachment of smart-tag bands around the arm, leg or piece of equipment which are then monitored by a number of Wi-Fi access points.  The technology is of particular interest to the health service where employees and patients can be monitored in all areas and expensive equipment can be tracked in real time.  More topically, some schools are considering adopting the technology to keep tabs on students’ movements during break times.  Could this technology then be successfully translated into a domestic environment to the benefit of the family?  Possibly for the protection and tracking of our children or elderly relatives (the topic of another article perhaps), but to keep tabs on our spouses? Well, let’s just say that the only band I want my husband to wear is the one around his finger.  So, with that wireless analogy out of the way, let’s swiftly move on shall we?

Good Communication

As I continue to write and develop this article further, it strikes me that I really don’t want to impose some ‘Stepfordian’ message about internal change via technology. Instead, I realise that I should perhaps focus on how wireless can be used to enhance and sustain what is already, in my opinion, a damn good marriage.  I only hope that my husband is taking the same perspective in his piece.  We shall of course see.  Dean and I already enjoy the peace of mind that comes from having constant contact with each other via our mobile phones and instant messaging.  Thanks to our Bluetooth headsets we can converse with each other whilst driving across different time zones.  We use Skype daily to forward our thoughts and attachments in real-time to each other and our wireless web cams afford us the opportunity to affectionately gaze at one another from separate hotel rooms around the globe.  Not the most romantic image I know, but a great deal better than the business trips of a decade ago, when most mobiles were unusable abroad and wireless access in hotels just wasn’t an option.  Yes, I have to admit that mine is sometimes a ‘virtual’ marriage these days but it’s better than not having one at all and it always gives me a sense of satisfaction to know that he is reachable wirelessly and that I can see him to say goodnight before I go to bed.
